10 Tips for Choosing a College
Shopping around for a college can be a very intensive and confusing issue. There are a few important things you should always remember when looking for the college that will best suit your educational needs:
1. What courses do they offer? Since you’ve already most likely chosen a major, “shop around” and find out which colleges offer the most comprehensive classes that cover the subjects you’re interested in. Many online colleges also offer supplemental classes in the event the college you want to get into doesn’t have them.
2. Will my credits transfer? Make sure your college credits will move with you from school to school in the even that you want to change colleges later. This is important because you may end up having to take some classes over if they don’t transfer.
3. Is the college fully accredited? Fully accredited schools are certified and offer high quality education. Most online schools today are also fully accredited, so check with the school before or during the application period to make sure.
4. How close is the campus to my home? Commuting can put a damper on your school life, so make sure you pick one that’s close to home. If no schools are close to where you live, look into enrolling in online classes instead.
5. What kind of degree am I looking for? What school you choose often depends on your level of education. For example, a bachelor’s degree may allow you to choose from a wider variety of schools, while a master’s degree might put some restrictions on your choices. Think about the level you’re seeking, and use that to help choose the best school for you.
6. How are the professors? The best way to answer this question is through word of mouth. Ask around to some students and find out what they think of the professors. This can make a huge difference in your experience. Online courses have professors, too, so visit the school website’s message board and network with other students.
7. What makes the school unique? Look for things about each college that appeal to you personally. Perhaps is the way the campus is laid out, how high tech they are, or what kind of students attend the school. If you’re spending the next four years there, you want to be sure it’s a place you’ll enjoy being.
8. What kind of financial aid is available? College isn’t cheap, so make sure the school of your choice accepts various grants and loans. Remember that most online colleges also accept financial aid as well.
9. What is required of my time? How much time will you need to put into your college days? Can you spread them out, or do you have to be booked full time the entire term? Look into online colleges for a time saving alternative that gives more flexibility.
10. How many graduates go on to the career of their choice? Not all college grads get to be the doctor or lawyer they aspired to be, so look into what percentage of graduates actually entered into the job field they went in for. This can make a big difference when it comes to choosing the school for you.
